February 08, 2018
San Antonio Texas - With only two months away from the start of the Inaugural 2018 UPSL season, Genova FC San Antonio announced Thursday the change of its name to Samba FC San Antonio. John Rexroat, general manager and owner said the name change would strengthen fans' connection and also create higher professional playing opportunities for his players through the networking with upper league professional clubs and academies.
"Our team crest and colors will remain the same," said Rexroat. "The only thing we are changing is the name. I've always been fond of the name Samba. Its a cool name and a good chant for our fans."
Prior to the name change. The team decided to make a jump to compete in the United Premier Soccer League (UPSL) for the 2018 Spring season. UPSL is a strong 4th tier league equal to the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) and the Premier Development League (PDL).
As part of the name change, Rexroat will rebirth his Samba Youth Academy which he founded in San Antonio back in 2012 and then closed the doors in the Spring of 2016. The academy will coincide with the men's semi pro team Samba FC San Antonio and will serve to develop local youth players for competition in club soccer.
"We look forward to the reopening of our academy and to help develop players in San Antonio. Also we are excited for our senior team to compete in UPSL especially with our new name Samba FC San Antonio. Can't wait to hear the new chant from our fans. We are Samba! Somos Samba!", said Rexroat.
The UPSL 2018 inaugural Spring season will begin in early May with 10 teams competing in the Texas Conference. A couple more teams could possibly be added in the next couple of weeks.
Samba FC San Antonio will continue to play its home games at Wheatley Heights Sports Complex. The $10 million and 5000-seat stadium was funded in 2012 by the city of San Antonio and Bexar County.
