Samba FC San Antonio Announces Head Coach For 2019 UPSL Women's Team

San Antonio, TX, October 25, 2019 - Samba FC San Antonio made history Wednesday when it announced that Agustin “Augie" Mendez, ex division one Mexican player for Club America has the new head coach for the 2019 UPSL Women's team. The Samba women's team will compete in the newly formed UPSL Central Division in 2019.

" Coach Mendez experience and track record of developing players to the elite level is most impressive," said Samba FC San Antonio Owner & General Manager, John Rexroat. " I've known Coach Mendez for a few years and his passion for the game and impacting players is what drives his success. His structure and philosophy fits perfectly for our organization and one of the reasons why I hired him as the head coach for our UPSL Women's team. I have the utmost confidence that our women's team will emerge and succeed under his leadership".

Currently the assistant coach since 2017 for the Samba FC San Antonio men's team and competing in the UPSL Central Division South. Mendez is the first head coach for the Samba FC San Antonio women. He is also the former coach for the United States Army men and women teams. Coaching positions he has held combined for 20 years and has also played on the men's team.

"I want to thank the owner and general manager of Samba FC San Antonio, John Rexroat for the opportunity to be the head coach for the Samba FC San Antonio women's team," said coach Agustin Mendez. "It has been very rewarding to assist and collaborate the last three seasons with coach Rexroat, and an honor to be part of the Samba men's UPSL team. Looking forward to continue assisting the men's team and also looking forward and excited for this new challenge on starting a new chapter with the women's team".

The Samba FC San Antonio women's will hold their first tryout on November 03, 2018 at Wheatley Heights Sports Complex in an effort to expand their roster and discover players for the UPSL 2019 inaugural season.

Head Coach Agustin “Augie” Mendez:

Coach Mendez started his professional playing career at age 15 in Mexico. He continued to follow his passion for the game after he joined the US Military. He has over 30 years of coaching experience with professional, semi-professional and amateur teams in the US and overseas, taking teams on to win championships at various levels. After retiring from the military in 2010, Mendez coached for several youth clubs n San Antonio and is currently the Girls Head Soccer Coach at Antonian College Preparatory High School in San Antonio, Texas.

Coach Mendez holds a NSCAA Professional “C” License certification. His coaching experience includes:

  • Former Player Club America, Division 1 Professional Mexican League (MX)

  • Player/Coach of Orizaba FC 2nd Professional Division in Mexico, played for Fuerzas Basicas PUMAS Academy

  • Head Coach for the United States All Army Soccer Team. 5 Gold, 6 Silver Medals.

  • Head Coach for the United States Armed Forces Men Soccer Team in CISM Qualifiers Soccer Tournaments and in one CISM Soccer World Cup in Egypt

  • Head Coach for the United States Armed Forces Women Soccer Team in the following CISM Women Soccer World Cups: Holland, USA, France, World Games in Brazil, Germany and helped the Armed Forces Sports Office in the Selection and training of the women’s team that went to the World Games in India

  • SA United Soccer Club as the Girls Technical Director, and Junior Program Director Girls

  • Head Coach for Antonian College Preparatory High School

  • Recruiting Director for Victory United Kinetic F.C. Youth Soccer Club
